- Dion Phaneuf and Doug MacLean join celebrity line up at 2010 Special
Olympics Festival - Special Olympics PEI is delighted
to welcome Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Dion Phaneuf back to the
21st Special Olympic Festival. Phaneuf was drafted ninth overall
in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames, and made his
NHL debut in 2005 after a four year junior career with the Red Deer
Rebels of the Western Hockey League in which he was twice named
the Defenceman of the Year. He set a Flames record for most goals
by a first-year defenceman and was named a finalist for the Calder
Memorial Trophy as top rookie in 2005–06.
Also confirmed for the event is Summerside
native Doug MacLean. Doug is a Canadian sportscaster and former
ice hockey coach and general manager. He is the former president/general
manager and head coach of the National Hockey League's Columbus
Blue Jackets and was also the head coach of the Florida Panthers.
These celebrities join a growing list which
includes: Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons; Andy O’Brien;
TSN’s Gino Reda; Nazim Kadri; SOPEI male and female athletes
of the year Amie Sullivan and Kolton Doucette; and Special Olympics
athlete and 2010 Easter Seals Ambassador Colton Matheson.
The June 22 Festival is the largest fundraiser
for Special Olympics PEI. The event consists of a breakfast in Summerside
and a Gala dinner at the Delta Prince Edward in Charlottetown.
Special Olympics PEI is a charitable organization
dedicated to enriching the lives of Islanders with an intellectual
disability through sport. SOPEI began in 1982, with the focus on
inclusion. Today SOPEI offers over 40 summer and winter programs
to more than 350 Islanders with an intellectual disability. Programs
are available to those as young as 2 years of age and adult programs
in community sport are open to Islanders up to 80. Athletes can
participate in either community or competitive sport streams and
have the opportunity to train year-round and compete at games held
provincially, nationally, and internationally.
Tickets for this year’s Charlottetown
Gala Dinner & Auction are just $100 and $35 for the Breakfast
in Summerside.
Tickets are going quick for both events and
there are a limited number of tickets available. For more information

April
20th, 2010 - Mike “Pinball” Clemons confirmed keynote
speaker for upcoming Special Olympics Festival -
It is now no longer a rumour or a mere possibility, it has been
confirmed, Mike “Pinball” Clemons will be the keynote
speaker at the upcoming Special Olympics Festival being held June
22. “It is very exciting for all of us to have an athlete
of such high calibre attending the festival this year” states
Reid Barnett - Volunteer Chair of the Special Olympics Festival.

“He (Clemons) is one of Canada’s
most recognized athletes and an exciting motivational speaker. Through
a partnership with the Holland College Hurricanes, the newest member
of the Atlantic Football League, we are able to bring Mr. Clemons
to PEI. On behalf of Special Olympics PEI, I would like to express
our gratitude to Holland College for their support.” It is
hard to argue against Clemons being one of the all time greatest
Canadian athletes. Clemons holds the world record for most career
all-purpose yards by a professional football player with 25,396
yards. He also boasts three Grey Cup Championships as a player and
one as a head coach, and was twice the recipient of the Tom Pate
award, which goes to the player who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship
and contribution to both the team and the community. Aside from
his outstanding athletic career, Clemons is also well known for
his exuberant personality as a motivational speaker and also for
his commitment to community work. His organization, the Michael
“Pinball” Clemons Foundation raises money for several
charitable organizations, as well as providing scholarships for
underprivileged post-secondary students, and now he will be coming
to Prince Edward Island to help raise money for Special Olympics
PEI.
Tickets to the fundraising gala are $100
and are available at the SOPEI office on 40 Enman Crescent or by
phone at 368-8919. The ticket holder will have the opportunity to
mingle with the stars at a private dinner and a live and silent
auction. All proceeds will benefit Special Olympic athletes from
Prince Edward Island. Clemons adds to the growing list of confirmed
celebrities which now include hockey sensation Nazem Kadri, and
famed TSN announcer Gino Reda. Volunteer organizers caution that
tickets will not last long, especially as the impressive guest list
grows. For this once in a lifetime opportunity contact Tracey Rochon
at Special Olympics PEI at 368-8919 or email tracey@sopei.com.

- Kadri and Reda to be in attendance at 2010 Special Olympics Festival
- Special Olympics PEI has officially confirmed
that Canadian hockey star Nazem Kadri will be attending this year’s
Special Olympic Festival. Kadri is the 7th draft pick of the Toronto
Maple Leafs, silver medalist at the 2010 World Junior Tournament
and the fourth player of Lebanese descent to play in the NHL.
Also confirmed for the event is TSN sportscaster
Gino Reda. This year will mark Reda’s 13th year as Master
of Ceremonies after a two year hiatus. Reda is currently the host
of TSN’s That’s Hockey and host of Junior Hockey Magazine,
a weekly syndicated radio show covering the weekly stories from
the Canadian Hockey League..
The upcoming festival will take place on
June 22nd, and is the largest fundraiser for Special Olympics PEI.
The event consists of a luncheon in Summerside and a Gala dinner
at the Delta Prince Edward in Charlottetown. The annual event will
bring together Island business owners and business people to attempt
to raise $60,000 to go towards supporting Prince Edward Island’s
Special Olympics athletes.
