December 17, 2007 – SOAR Car Lottery Winners Announced - Wendy Harris, (O’Leary PE) has begun planning her next vacation and wants to go on a cruise thanks to Special Olympics Atlantic Region’s Car Lottery. Her name was drawn December 14, 2007 on CTV’s Live at 5 as PEI’s winner of a tropical vacation for 2. Wendy bought 1 of the $5 tickets from a local volunteer at the O’Leary Co-op to help support local athletes with intellectual disabilities and for a chance to win the trip for two or the 2008 Toyota Matrix. “My friends were calling me all night Friday to tell me my name was drawn for the Special Olympics lottery vacation prize on CTV. September 12, 2007 - Give a Dollar Share a Dream Campaign 2007 - Each year Staples gives its customers the opportunity to make a donation to Special Olympics with their purchase. The customer is able to extend their best wishes to athletes through a postcard as well.

This year’s campaign is set to kick off on November 1st and will run until November 17, 2007. The national goal for this year's campaign is $600,000.00, so come out to Staples and show you support during this year’s event.

Staples will once again be holding fun events throughout the campaign so stay informed at this website as events are announced.

As you might recall there was quite a rivalry between the two PEI stores last year. Each one trying to have a more outrageous campaign than the other.

Last year, we had managers locked in kennels and placed in "cherry-pickers" during rainstorms. Who knows what they'll come up with to help out Special Olympics PEI this year? Time will tell who comes out on top this year!

July 19, 2007 - Draft A TEAM PEI Member - The Draft a Team Member initiative is beginning in August. Our goal is to have all 38 team members (coaches and athletes) on Team PEI drafted this year. June 26th, 2007 - Sport Celebrities Festival a HUGE success!! – The stars came out on June 21st! Special Olympics PEI’s 18th Annual Sports Celebrities Festival was held last Thursday evening at the Delta Prince Edward in Charlottetown and the Silver Fox in Summerside. Executive Director James McClean: “The SCF helps us to raise necessary funds to ensure that programs for athletes of all ages with intellectual disabilities are available tip-to-tip across PEI. This event also allows us to present that message to a wide and diverse audience, and have them join us in helping Islanders with intellectual disabilities reach their full potential in all areas of their lives.”

This year’s festival was a great success and the largest yet. Of significant mention was the silent auction and the new live auction which combined for a total of nearly $10,000.00.

SOPEI wishes to thank all those who contributed as volunteers, sponsors, and auction donators. It is your help in this fundraiser that will allow Special Olympics Pei to continue to provide quality sports opportunities to Islanders with an intellectual disability.

February 22, 2007 - Team PEI Brings Home the Hardware from New Brunswick

From February 15-18 2007, members of Special Olympics PEI were in Bathurst New Brunswick for the New Brunswick Winter Games. Over 60 athletes and missions staff from all over the Island traveled to compete. This event is used as a qualifier to determine who will be eligible for Team PEI 2008; a provincial team that will head to nationals in Quebec City.

Special Olympics PEI athletes competed in 5 winter sports at the event; they included floor hockey, curling, figure skating, Nordic skiing, and snow shoeing. This Team PEI was comprised of three curling teams, two floor hockey teams, two nordic skiers and one snow shoer. For some, like Rick Chan, it was the first opportunity to compete off-Island. For others it is one more chance to bring home more gold to PEI.

There were certainly some great stories stemming from the games. Like Rick Chan winning Gold and Silver on his birthday, at his very first competition in Nordic skiing. Or, the Summerside and Charlottetown teams facing off in the Floor Hockey bronze medal game; where pride and bragging rights were on the line next to the medals.

In total, Team PEI came home with 5 gold medals, 3 silvers, 2 bronze, and a slew of personal bests. Click here to see the FULL TEAM Results.

The Team and the Police Association representatives exchanged messages of thanks, and good luck, for the Winter Games.
